About Sisters3Farm

Your Favorite Garlic Farm!

The three of us spent our childhood growing up on our Family’s dairy and hog Farm, doing whatever we could to help out, with no brothers in the family we did everything from driving a tractor in the fields to milking our herd of dairy cows to tending to the hogs. Looking back, we feel fortunate to have been raised by two amazing hardworking parents, who instilled in us a strong work ethic and a love for farm and family. We simply loved this way of life.

As time went on eventually the dairy herd was replaced by beef cattle and the many buildings that were once filled with hogs became empty. The years passed by and soon it was just our Dad on the farm with his beloved cutie of a dog, named Emma by his side.

“Garlic scapes are my “new” favorite spice! I add it to almost every dish. Ex: Omelets, egg salad and meatloaf. I can’t believe the smooth and tasty flavor it has added to my dishes. I couldn’t imagine not cooking with garlic or scapes.”

Our Happy Customers!

"Coming in several varieties and packaged with notes on the qualities and best uses for each, Debbie’s garlic was exceptional! I used it exclusively until I ran out and wished I had bought more. I had to ask this summer if the sale would be back this year. Can’t wait!"

How We Grow Our Garlic

Instead of using chemical fertilizers, we use a fish emulsion, which comes in a concentrated form and we just dilute it with water.  We spray the emulsion on the plant when we spot the first garlic leaves peeking up through the ground and then reapply about every two weeks, which is usually through the months of May and June.   It’s gentle to the plant when applied and gives the plant burn free nitrogen along with phosphorus and potassium and also it increases the activity of the little bugs living in the soil by giving them nutrients to eat and to breakdown for the plant, making the soil nice and airy. It’s a win win!

Another way we are keeping things simple and natural is by using a cover crop to keep our weeds down and to get our soil ready for garlic planting. We use a mixture of buckwheat and cowpeas.  Planting the cover crop is done a couple of weeks after we have harvested the garlic, usually around the third week in July. The soil is worked up with our tiller and tractor and the use of a drag to smooth out the soil.  Then we each grab a pail with seed and hand toss it across our field, then run the drag to work in the seed. .

It is amazing how quickly it comes up, in just a week’s time we have a cover crop already poking up through the ground.  In addition to it helping our soil, the plants are also great for our colony of honeybees as well as other insects that come to enjoy the flowers.  We let the plants continue to grow until about two weeks before garlic planting. At that time we mow over the vegetation and till it back into the soil, making some awesome green manure.  It breaks down just in time to plant our garlic.

When choosing what varieties of garlic to grow we considered their hardiness to grow and store, what flavors they possessed and the different dishes they worked especially good in, their health properties, and sometimes just their names or their history were enough to pique our interest. Take German Porcelain as an example, we chose this variety because of its strong, robust flavor has staying power but isn’t overwhelming or hot. High sugar content makes these bulbs excellent when roasted. Originally from Germany, this long-time favorite was popularized by an organic farmer from New York.

Music was chosen because it has a rich and robust taste suited for raw and cooked preparations. The variety has a versatile flavor and can be blended into sauces and dips or based spreads for sandwiches. In addition, to fresh preparations, Music garlic can be blended into sauces and dips or infused into olive oils, vinaigrettes, and relishes. Try chopping Music garlic into salsa or mincing into herb based spreads for sandwiches. In addition to fresh preparations, Music garlic develops a complex flavoring when roasted. The bulbs can be roasted whole, and heating the bulbs enhances the natural sugars, creating a caramelized effect. Roasted garlic can be tossed into pasta, spread on bread, or mixed into mashed potatoes and purees. Music garlic can also be added to stir-fry’s, simmered into soups, curries, and chili, melted into grilled cheese, or cooked with meats such as sausage or shrimp, or mixed with roasted root vegetables. They all have a special reason to be in our lineup, our variety offers something for everyone here; there are no wrong choices.
